COMPOSERS

Celebrated as a musical “powerhouse” (The Washington Post), ALLISON LOGGINS-HULL is a composer, flutist, and producer whose work defies genre, from symphonic music to film scores, chamber and electronic music. Her signature style of composing for orchestra is characterized by unique sonic effects that echo contemporary music production techniques. Her works are profoundly influenced by Black American music, creating a vibrant and kaleidoscopic sonic palette. Thematically, her compositions are deeply rooted in the experiences of community, culture, and life, offering a rich and evocative musical narrative. Her artistic reflections on Black stories, music, and experience, have led to works aligned with Afrofuturism, a movement that imagines alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures. In her newest appointment, she will serve as Resident Artistic Partner to the New Jersey Symphony, for a term beginning in September 2024.

Loggins-Hull formed the groundbreaking duo Flutronix, and has performed as an accompanist to major pop acts including Lizzo and Frank Ocean. She has performed on multiple blockbuster film scores and composed the score for Bring Them Back, an award-winning documentary executive produced by Debbie Allen about the legendary dancer Maurice Hines. In 2023, she led an ensemble of flutists at the Met Gala, backing a performance by Lizzo.

This season marks Loggins-Hull’s last of three years as the Lewis Composer Fellow with the Cleveland Orchestra, an engagement that focuses the narratives and history of Cleveland through the prism of one of the world’s great orchestras, culminating in three world premieres.

Flutist GILI SCHWARZMAN performs regularly as a soloist at the Musikverein Wien, Berlin Philharmonie, Auditorio Nacional Madrid, among others. Gili collaborates often with some of the most celebrated artists of our time in chamber music concerts, festivals, and in recordings for Europe’s Radio and TV broadcasters.

In September 2022 she launched her first Sony Classical CD at Carnegie Hall, enriching flute repertoire with pieces written by composer Jorge Grundman. Her discography also includes a CD, recorded for Pentatone, that features chamber music with arrangements of some of the greatest works for flute and strings. This CD, Old Souls, features some of Gili’s most beloved chamber music partners: violinist Guy Braunstein, violist Amihai Grosz, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein.

Among her solo and chamber music performances, Gili has also toured with the West Eastern Divan Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Daniel Barenboim for several years, and she enjoys giving masterclasses to young talents as well.

During the 2020 Covid lockdowns, while unable to travel and perform, Gili had the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream to bring her own compositions to life. Her new path took off quickly, and in 2022 the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin premiered her first orchestral work Portrait. Joined by the exciting choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, this piece was performed in June 2023 by the dancers of the Royal Ballet and San Francisco Ballet in Festival Paax in Mexico, conducted by Maestra Alondra de la Parra. Gili’s first complete work was commissioned by Alisa Weilerstein. Prelude is inspired by Alisa’s personality and playing, as well as the composer’s personal family history.
