Shostakovich 2 with Barcelona and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestras
On the heels of performing and recording Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Alisa Weilerstein joins orchestras in Spain and the UK this month with this cornerstone of the cello repertoire. Three concerts with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Diego Matheuz take place October 16 through 18, followed by two performances with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and her husband, conductor Rafael Payare — in Glasgow on October 22 and Leeds on October 24.
Wrote the Guardian of Alisa’s rendition of the concerto with the Hallé Orchestra, “It takes an exceptionally responsive cellist to make sense of it all, and Alisa Weilerstein proved herself to be one of the few who can. Her playing ranged from tranquil passages of sensual beauty to rough, demotic outbursts performed with the furious expression of one who has been rudely awoken from a beautiful dream.”
Later in the season, Alisa brings the concerto to the US with Rafael Payare, appearing with the Cincinnati Orchestra on December 4 and 5.
